This blog is the first in an ongoing series called Daily Mover: short conversations with peopleI meet randomly in my travels around, Fremantle, Perth and beyond. I speak to them about their movement practice, habits and philosophy.
Fremantle Skate Park
On most weekends I head to Freo skate park for an early skate session in the bowl. I like the early mornings because the park is usually quiet. I met Amber and Margo, two Roller Derby enthusiasts learning to ‘drop in’ on the transition for the first time. We had a terrific sesh skating together.
My name’s Amber but my Roller Derby name’s Bamba.
My name is Marga. I’m French and I’m travelling Australia on my skates. My roller derby name is Bonda.
Why are you at Freo Skatepark?
Bamba: I’m here because I wanted to improve my skating ability, I gave it a go two weeks ago for the first time and this is my second time here and I met Margo.
Bonda: We’re skating together because we like to take risks and our improvement has been quite fast.
Why do you skate?
Bamba: We skate because we love it.
Bonda: I feel so free on skates
Bamba: yes, I like the exercise, its like you are tricked into excercising and before you know it, a couple of hours have gone by and you ‘ve worked up a really good sweat and you get to go different places and its just fun.
Talk to me about risk…
Bamba: We were all our roller derby protective gear, elbow guards, wrist guards, knee guards, helmet, there is a risk to skating but you’ve just got to take it. I like the opportunity to do something new, learn challenge myself
Bonda: yeah, I always want to do better, and to do that, you have to take risks.
Bamba: The other thing is, there are role models. You can see people doing it, so if they can do it why can’t I? I saw a Facebook post with a lady that’s 65 and who had started skateboarding and that inspired me. I thought if she at 65 can do it.
I, at 42.5 could do it!
Bonda: Yes its not just for kids. We can do it too!
